Priča započinje pripovijedanjem o svom djetinjstvu, kada je išao na spavanje i majka mu je davala ili uskraćivala poljubac prije spavanja.

U više stotina stranica autor je opisao svoje djetinjstvo i mladost koja se odvijala u drugoj polovici 19. stoljeća pa sve do Prvog svjetskog rata. Autor je u romanesknu prozu predočio opise Pariza, Illiersa(Combray), poznanstva, prijateljstva i ljubavi. Sve to može se označiti kao autobiografija ili memoarska proza, a specifična je i po visokom stupnju transformacije.
