Dobrica Ćosić

The trilogy "The Time of Evil" by Dobrica Ćosić presents a different reflection on the turning events that led to the civil war in the middle of the 20th century and the birth of socialist Yugoslavia from the ashes of the old regime. The Apostate is the s

Set in Serbia in 1915, amidst the Austro-Hungarian occupation, the novel explores themes of betrayal, resistance and sacrifice. The main character, Ivan Katic, an intellectual and idealist, struggles with the disintegration of family and society while Serbia descends into chaos. After the defeat in the war, Ivan faces losses – the death of his brother, estrangement from his father Vukašin and his own internal struggle with a sense of powerlessness.

As Austro-Hungarian forces impose brutal rule, Ivan joins the resistance, but his faith in the ideals of freedom and justice is shaken by encounters with traitors and moral compromises. In parallel, the story follows other characters, such as Vukašin, whose patriarchal worldview comes into conflict with new realities, and peasants who struggle for bare survival.

Ćosić masterfully combines historical authenticity with deep psychological analysis, showing how war destroys not only the country, but also the souls of people. The novel is permeated with themes of apostasy – from nation, family, and even oneself – as characters search for meaning in the vortex of suffering. With powerful dialogue and detailed descriptions of Serbian tragedy, The Apostate is a moving chronicle of resistance and loss, appreciated for its emotional power and universal questions about humanity.
