Erich Maria Remarque

Njemački književnik (Osnabrück, 22. VI. 1898 – Locarno, Švicarska, 25. IX. 1970). Bio je vojnik u I. svjetskom ratu, više puta ranjavan; 1922. novinar u Hannoveru, poslije u Berlinu. Uspjeh je postigao antimilitarističkim romanom Na zapadu ništa novo (Im Westen nichts Neues, 1929), koji je preveden na pedesetak jezika i više puta ekraniziran. Djelo prikazuje grozote ratne svakidašnjice i solidarnost vojnika, »malih ljudi«. Tradicionalnim pripovjednim sredstvima u svojim romanima ocrtava njemačku povijest između 1914. i 1945., pri čem pokazuje izraženo pacifističko stajalište te istupa protiv nacizma. Njegove su knjige 1933. u Njemačkoj bile javno spaljene, a njemu oduzeto njemačko državljanstvo; od 1939. u SAD-u. Ostala djela: Povratak (Der Weg zurück, 1931), Tri ratna druga (Drei Kameraden, 1938), Ljubi bližnjega svoga (Liebe deinen Nächsten, 1941), Slavoluk pobjede (Arc de Triomphe, 1946), Iskra života (Der Funke Leben, 1952), Doba za život i doba za smrt (Zeit zu leben und Zeit zu sterben, 1954) i dr.
