Harriet Beecher-Stowe

*Uncle Tom’s Cabin* follows the slave Tom—who, after being sold, ends up in the hands of the cruel Legree—as well as Eliza and George, who flee toward freedom with their child. The novel exposes the inhumanity of slavery and the destruction of families.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel by the American author Harriet Beecher Stowe, first published in serial form in 1851 and subsequently as a book in 1852. It emerged during a time of fierce debate in America over slavery, particularly following the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which authorized the capture and return of fugitive slaves even from free states.

The story begins in Kentucky, where a debt-ridden landowner, Arthur Shelby, decides to sell two slaves: the honest and deeply religious Tom and a young boy named Harry. Harry's mother, Eliza, horrified by the prospect of losing her son, flees with him across the frozen Ohio River. Her husband, George Harris, also escapes from slavery, and the family attempts to reach freedom in Canada after facing numerous perils.

Tom refuses to flee so as not to endanger the other slaves and is sold. Along the way, he meets a young girl named Eva St. Clare, whose kindness deeply affects those around her. Her father, Augustine, buys Tom with the intention of freeing him, but following Augustine's sudden death, Tom is once again put up for auction. He is purchased by Simon Legree, a cruel plantation owner. There, Tom meets Cassy and Emmeline and helps them, but refuses to betray the fugitive slave women. Legree has him brutally beaten for his disobedience, and Tom dies without renouncing his convictions. Through the fates of Tom, Eliza, George, Eva, Topsy, and other characters, Stowe portrays human trafficking, the separation of families, violence, and humiliation as integral parts of the system of slavery. The novel is simultaneously a family drama, a moral condemnation of slavery, and a powerful call for compassion and human equality.

The novel had an extraordinary social impact: hundreds of thousands of copies were sold in the United States within the very first year, and in 1853, Stowe published A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a collection of documents and materials defending the authenticity of her portrayal of slavery.
