Knjiga je podeljena na tri dela. Prvi, „Definicije i razgraničenja“, razmatra šta je književnost, razlikujući je od drugih umetnosti i nauka. Velek i Voren zagovaraju „unutrašnji“ pristup, fokusirajući se na tekst, a ne na autorovu biografiju ili društveni kontekst. Drugi deo, „Unutrašnje proučavanje književnosti“, analizira elemente kao što su stil, narativ, simboli i metrika, naglašavajući važnost formalne analize. Posebno su zabrinuti za koncepte žanra, teme i književne evolucije. Treći deo, „Spoljašnji odnosi književnosti“, istražuje odnos književnosti prema psihologiji, sociologiji, filozofiji i drugim umetnostima, ali upozorava na redukcionizam koji ignoriše estetsku vrednost dela.

Autori promovišu interdisciplinarni, ali disciplinovani pristup, kombinujući teoriju sa praktičnim primerima. Njihov naglasak na autonomiji književnog dela i objektivnoj analizi uticao je na modernu kritiku. Iako ponekad kritikovana zbog previše formalne, knjiga ostaje suštinska za razumevanje književne teorije, cenjena zbog svoje jasnoće, dubine i uticaja na književnu nauku.
