Eva Luna, the daughter of the maid Consuelo who was conceived by a gardener after a snake bite, was born into poverty. The mother dies quickly, leaving Eva to wealthy employers: a cook, the inventor of "Universal Substance" and street vagabonds. She meets Hubert Naranjo, a future guerrilla, and lives in a brothel with a trans woman, Mimí, while police raids destroy her world. She is rescued by the Turkish merchant Riad Halabí in the village of Agua Santa, where he reads Zulemi stories, witnesses incest and loses his virginity to Riad before the scandal.

In the city, in the midst of dictatorship and rebellions, Eva returns to Naranjo (now Commander Rogelio), starts a love affair with him and lives with Mimí, now an actress. He writes scripts for telenovelas, meets Rolf Carlé, an Austrian cameraman with the trauma of a Nazi father, who films the revolution. Together, they participate in the rescue of guerrillas from Santa María prison using fake weapons from "Universal Matter", turning it into a public scandal. Eva and Rolf get married, and she offers two endings to their love – happy and sad, leaving the reader to choose.
