Miško Kranjec

An autobiographical novel by Slovenian writer Miško Kranjec (1908–1983).

In this work, the writer looks back retrospectively on his childhood and youth in his native Prekmurje. The novel is imbued with strong emotions and lyricism. It depicts growing up in a poor but emotionally rich environment. The author describes the small, ordinary people from his region (peasants, day laborers, neighbors) with a lot of love and understanding, emphasizing their nobility and life struggle. The landscape of Prekmurje plays a key role, almost as a separate character in the novel. Kranjec is known for introducing social themes from the Pannonian region into Slovenian literature, and "I Loved Them" is considered one of his warmest and most intimate works. The foreword was written by Stanko Janež. Kranjec was the author of a very extensive opus, in the spirit of socialist realist poetics he mainly depicted the life of the Prekmurje village. His prose is characterized by pronounced lyricism.
