Erich Maria Remarque

Germany after World War I. Three inseparable war comrades struggle to survive amid poverty and inflation. In the chaos, one of them finds great love – but time is against them.

Three Comrades in War (1936) is one of the most famous and moving novels by Erich Marie Remarque, author of the cult All Quiet on the Western Front. The story takes place in Germany in the late 1920s, during an economic crisis, hyperinflation, and the political collapse of the Weimar Republic.

The main characters are three inseparable friendsRobert Lohkamp, Otto Köster, and Gottfried Lenz – veterans of the First World War who survived the hell of the trenches. Now together they run a small auto repair shop and try to survive in a world that has forgotten them.

Through their friendship, dark humor, shared rides in old cars, and endless conversations, Remarque paints a dramatic picture of the post-war generation. Patricia Hollmann – a beautiful, sick, and sophisticated upper-class girl – enters Robert’s life. A tender, deep, and tragic love is born between them, representing the last light in an increasingly dark time.

The novel is simultaneously nostalgic, melancholic and full of vitality. Remarque masterfully shows how the war did not end in 1918 – it continued to live on in the people who returned home. The friendship of three friends becomes the only constant value in a world that is falling apart: unemployment, political violence, poverty and the coming Nazism.

Three Comrades is considered Remarque's most beautiful novel about love and friendship. The style is emotional, but without excessive pathos, and the characters are alive, vulnerable and unforgettable. The book was burned by the Nazis in 1933, and Remarque had to flee Germany.

This edition is an excellent choice for lovers of classic European literature of the 20th century, fans of Remarque and all those who love stories about true male friendship, great love and a generation lost in the whirlwind of history.
