Čitanka s gramatičkim vježbama i pismenim sastavima za I razred stručnih produžnih škola

Vladimir Prestini, Ivo Škarpa

The Prestinija and Škarpa Grammar Exercises Reader (1937) is a school textbook that belongs to a group of textbooks intended for students of vocational extension schools in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Extension schools were aimed at continuing the education of young people after completing primary school, especially those who were preparing for crafts, trades and other practical professions. The textbook by Prestini and Škarpa was designed as a comprehensive teaching aid that connects language culture, reading comprehension and the development of written expression.

The content of the textbook includes selected literary and educational texts adapted to the age and educational needs of the students. The texts served not only to practice reading but also as a starting point for grammatical analysis, enriching the vocabulary and acquiring correct language use. In addition to the reading section, there are grammar exercises that cover basic language categories, spelling rules and syntactic relationships, enabling students to gradually develop language competence.

The textbook is particularly valuable in the section dedicated to written compositions. Through given topics and examples, students learned to form descriptive, narrative and report texts, which was important for their further education and professional development. The methodological approach is based on linking theoretical knowledge with practical language tasks, characteristic of the pedagogy of the interwar period.

The work represents a valuable example of school textbooks from the 1930s and testifies to the teaching methods, language norms and educational goals of vocational education at that time. As a historical source, it provides insight into the way of teaching the mother tongue and the development of literacy among students of vocational extension schools in the first half of the 20th century.
