Slike iz obćega zemljopisa. Knjiga V., dio II.: Bugarska - Srbija - Crna Gora

Ivan Hoić

"Pictures from General Geography" is a popular geographical work that depicts Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro through their natural features, population, history, economy and culture, with numerous illustrations and a geographical map.

The work Pictures from General Geography is among the most significant Croatian popular-scientific geographical publications from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The fifth book, dedicated to the Slavic countries of Southeast Europe, covers Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, presenting them to the Croatian reader through a combination of geography, history, ethnography and economy. The book contains as many as 130 illustrations and one geographical map, which was an exceptionally rich set of equipment for the time.

Hoić does not write a dry textbook, but rather tries to bring individual countries closer to the reader with vivid descriptions of landscapes, cities and people. He pays special attention to the relief, rivers, mountains and climatic features, explaining how natural conditions shape the life of the population. At the same time, he describes the historical development of the Balkan states, their struggle for independence and the creation of modern national institutions.

The value of the book also lies in the depiction of everyday life. The author describes folk costumes, customs, religious communities, languages, and economic activities, trying to show the peculiarities of each nation. In keeping with the spirit of the times, he emphasizes the cultural and historical connections between the Slavic peoples and views the Balkans as a space of intense social and political change.

Today, this work is interesting not only as a geographical manual but also as a historical document. It shows how Croatian intellectuals at the beginning of the 20th century perceived the Slavic countries of Southeast Europe and represents a valuable source for studying the geographical knowledge, cultural perceptions, and political ideas of that time. Due to rich illustrations and detailed descriptions, the book retains its documentary and cultural-historical value more than a century after its publication.
