Ante Gugo

A suspenseful political-historical novel by Ante Guga from 2017. Through a mix of intelligence intrigues, war traumas and secrets from the past, the author exposes the dark side of modern Croatian politics and society.

"Harvest in a Field of Poison" is an intriguing and provocative novel by the famous Croatian journalist, publicist and analyst Ante Guga. In his fiction, the author combines elements of a political thriller, an intelligence novel and a social drama, creating a layered and tense story about the consequences of war, political underworld and covert powerful figures who control the destinies of ordinary people from the shadows. The plot of the novel leads the reader through a dark labyrinth in which events from the Homeland War intertwine with modern political and economic malfeasance. Through the destinies of the main characters — former defenders, secret agents, corrupt politicians and uncompromising researchers — Gugo bravely exposes how war traumas and established intelligence networks are misused for personal interests, power and the accumulation of wealth. The central theme of the novel is the "poison" sown in the past, the fruits of which society is reaping today through injustice, moral decay and a sense of betrayed ideals. Despite the dark atmosphere, a strong motivation to uncover the truth and fight for justice runs through the story. Written in a fast, dynamic and direct journalistic narrative style, with plenty of twists and convincing details, this book keeps the suspense going until the very end. "Harvest in a Field of Poison" is a striking thriller that mercilessly cuts into the anatomy of Croatian society and calls for a reexamination of recent history.
