Krsta Kilibarda's sociological study from 1976 investigates the position of workers, motivation for work and the practical implementation of worker self-management in the Yugoslav social system.
The book "Work and Self-Management" (1976) by dr. Krste Kilibarde presents a thorough sociological analysis of the relationship between work, management and the social position of workers in socialist Yugoslavia. The author, known for his extensive empirical and theoretical research in industrial sociology, deals in this work with the question of how far the concept of worker self-management has really taken root in the everyday practice of companies and work organizations. In the first part of the book, Kilibarda discusses the theoretical principles of self-management socialism, the definition of work as a fundamental social value, and the role of self-management in overcoming the alienation of workers. The second part is devoted to empirical insights: the author analyzes workers' attitudes towards work, their level of information, motivation to participate in decision-making, and relations between production workers and management structures. Although written within the dominant ideology of the time, the book brings valuable and critical observations about the obstacles that self-management faced - such as bureaucratization, the passivity of part of the workers and the disparity between theoretical rights and real decision-making power. The work remains an extremely important sociological and historical document for understanding the Yugoslav model of socio-economic organization.
