Sara i Serafina

Sara i Serafina

Dževad Karahasan

The novel Sara and Serafina has so far been translated into German, Swedish, Spanish and Slovenian, and the literary editorial office of the famous Zidojče Zeitung included it among the 50 best contemporary world novels.

A novel set in besieged, war-torn Sarajevo. After an introductory section in which he discusses the ethical and existential dilemmas exacerbated by the war, questioning an entire system of values, the narrator introduces the plot itself in the second chapter: he meets Serafina Bilal, a woman in her sixties who, together with her daughter, is to be taken out of besieged Sarajevo, which she resolutely refuses, but agrees to her daughter's departure. Serafina, who called herself Sara out of a sense of solidarity with a Jewish friend in World War II, is actually a tragically divided person on the inside, and her two names actually mark her two natures: Sara is a strong woman, who exudes kindness, love and light, turned inward. Through her personal destiny, the tragedy of wars in general is reflected, the tragedy of human existence torn between the pursuit of beauty, goodness, and spiritual values – and human wickedness, which always destroys these same values.
