Pod starimi krovovi: Zapisci i ulomci iz plemenitaškoga svieta

Ksaver Šandor Gjalski

Under Old Roofs (1886) is a collection of short stories by Ksaver Šandor Gjalski. It realistically and nostalgically depicts the decline of the Zagorje noble manors, old customs, and the conflict between generations during the collapse of feudal society.

Ksaver Šandor Gjalski (born Ljubomir Babić, 1854–1935), one of the most important Croatian realists of the 19th century, published the collection Pod starimi krovovi in 1886. It is one of his most successful and characteristic works.

The collection contains several interconnected stories and sketches in which the author depicts the life of the Zagorje noble manors and families in the second half of the 19th century. The main theme is the decline of the old noble society – economically, morally and spiritually. Gjalski describes the old manors, their inhabitants, customs, hierarchy and the slow death of a world under the influence of the new bourgeois and capitalist era with deep knowledge and nostalgia.

The most famous stories in the collection are Maričon, Kamenjari, Pod starimi krovovi, U noći and others. The author masterfully depicts the psychology of the characters – proud but impoverished noblemen, their rigidity, longing for the past and powerlessness in the face of new times. The style is classically realistic, with excellent descriptions of the Zagorje nature, the atmosphere of old houses and subtle irony.

The work is considered the pinnacle of Gjalski realism and one of the most important works of Croatian literature of the 19th century. Critics praised it for its authenticity, artistic maturity and social depth. Pod starimi krovovi strongly influenced later Croatian writers (especially Krleža and his depiction of Zagorje manors).

The 1886 edition is considered the first printing and is today a rare antiquarian edition. The collection remains a classic reading of Croatian realistic prose and an important document on the disintegration of the Croatian nobility in the era of modernization.
