Kritika #16

Kritika #16

A Croatian Spring issue debating the Novi Sad Agreement, Croatian in schools, small nations, cultural autonomy and economic relations within Yugoslavia.

Issue 16 of Kritika, published in January–February 1971, explores language, national identity and cultural autonomy during the Croatian Spring. Literary and scholarly discussion intersects with arguments about Croatia’s position and the place of national communities within Yugoslavia.

Its central theme concerns integration in the culture and literature of small nations. Dalibor Brozović examines standard language, Branimir Donat discusses literature and nationhood, and Franjo Tuđman considers cultural integration and small nations in history. Contributors also include Vladoje Gotovac, Ante Stamać and Ivo Vidan.

Julije Derossi’s contribution addresses Croatian literary language in Croatian schools, linking linguistic questions with education. Other debates concern cultural controversy, the journal’s own position, music and the interpretation of Croatian history.

Essays on Montenegrin history, satire and Russian prose, together with an interview with Vlatko Pavletić, broaden the issue’s scope. The volume records the close relationship between literary criticism, language policy and political debate in a pivotal year for Croatian cultural life.
