Antonio Adverse is a sweeping historical novel set during the Napoleonic Wars. The plot follows the life of Antonio Adverse, the illegitimate son of a Scottish noblewoman. Born in the 1770s, he is raised in Livorno by his grandfather, the wealthy merchant Bonnyfeather. After his grandfather's death, Anthony embarks on a whirlwind journey: Cuba, Africa (where he runs a slave trading post), Napoleon's Paris, and all the way to New Orleans and Mexico.

The novel is rich in adventure, exotic locations, love affairs (his great love for the singer Angela) and moral dilemmas. Anthony undergoes a profound inner transformation – from an ambitious and cynical adventurer to a man searching for meaning and redemption.

The work is a classic epic novel with picaresque elements – full of adventure, exotic locations (Italy, Africa, Louisiana, Mexico), historical figures and philosophical reflections on fate, money, power, slavery and spiritual redemption. The novel criticizes slavery and materialism, and the main character undergoes a profound inner transformation from an ambitious adventurer to a man searching for a higher meaning.

It was published in Croatia as part of the popular "Giant Book" – a collection of great world novels. Due to its scope and complexity, the book has often been compared to works such as Gone with the Wind. There is also a famous film adaptation from 1936 with Fredric March and Olivia de Havilland. Today it is regarded as a classic example of an epic historical novel with deep psychological and moral layers.
