Kenize Murad, unuka turskog sultana Murada, rođena je u Parizu i piše na francuskom jeziku. Svetsku slavu je stekla krajem osamdesetih godina 20. veka ovim romanom.

Autorka je priču o svojoj majci, turskoj princezi Selmi, zasnovala na istinitoj priči, a istkala ju je sa ljubavlju i nežnošću, bojeći istorijske činjenice ljudskom toplinom. Kroz život sultanove porodice u egzilu, ova knjiga opisuje način života i običaje u Libanu, a zatim i u Indiji, gde princeza Selma stiže nakon udaje za indijskog radžu. Poslednji deo knjige prikazuje i Pariz, u atmosferi neizvesnosti pred Drugi svetski rat.
