Prvo šišanje

Prvo šišanje

Bohumil Hrabal

The First Haircut, a short story written in 1970 and published in 1976, is the first in a series of prose pieces by Bohumil Hrabal describing Nymburk, the town where he spent his childhood. In 1981, The First Haircut was adapted for the screen by Jiry Men

At the center of the story is Maryška, a cheerful, dynamic and frivolous young woman whom her serious husband Francin, the brewery manager, tries in vain to restrain. When Francin's brother Pepin comes to visit them for a short visit that will last several decades, Maryška finds in him an interesting conversationalist and partner for various antics, including climbing the brewery chimney.

And when the first radio arrives in the town, Maryška concludes that it is time to cut her skirt and hair short... Although the story is told from the perspective of Hrabal's mother Maryška, the idyllic town and the mysterious spaces of the brewery are seen through the eyes of a child who constantly discovers magic in ordinary, everyday things and events.
