During the ban, the book was even sold illegally. The author's themes, such as homosexuality, premarital romances, and alcohol consumption, horrified traditionalists in Saudi Arabia, but also intrigued Saudi men who actually wanted to know more about the lives of girls in their country - girls who were so close, yet so hidden.
