E. Phillips Oppenheim

The Lion and the Lamb by E. Phillips Oppenheim (1920s) is a spy and adventure novel that intertwines intrigue, diplomacy, and a love story between a powerful “lion” and a naive “lamb” in the European political milieu.

The Lion and the Lamb is a novel by the famous English writer Edward Phillips Oppenheim (1866–1946), one of the most prolific authors of spy and adventure novels before and after the First World War.

The action takes place in the diplomatic and high social circles of Europe. The novel combines the classic elements of Oppenheim's style: international intrigue, secret agents, financial conspirators, political games and a romantic streak. The main characters symbolically represent the "lion" (a powerful, experienced and reckless man) and the "lamb" (a young, idealistic and vulnerable woman), whose fates are intertwined through dangerous events.

Oppenheim writes in a dynamic, elegant and somewhat old-fashioned style, with an emphasis on atmosphere, dialogue and tension. The novel belongs to his more mature period, when he was already known as the "king of spy novels" before the appearance of Ian Fleming and John le Carré.

The book was very popular in the Croatian/Serbian speaking area during the interwar period, and was published in several editions (mostly in translations in the 1920s and 1930s). It is a typical representative of the light but sophisticated entertainment literature of the time – a blend of romance, mystery and political conspiracy.

Today it is considered a classic example of the early spy genre and is appreciated among fans of vintage adventure prose.
