Evangelium vitae – Evanđelje života: O vrijednosti i nepovredivosti ljudskog života
The encyclical *Evangelium vitae* of John Paul II. emphasizes the sanctity and inviolability of human life from conception to natural death and calls for the protection of the dignity of every person and the building of a culture of life.
The encyclical Evangelium Vitae – The Gospel of Life: On the Value and Inviolability of Human Life (1995), by Pope John Paul II, is one of the foundational documents of contemporary Catholic social and moral teaching. Published on March 25, 1995—and available in Croatian through the publisher Kršćanska sadašnjost—the encyclical examines the sanctity, dignity, and inviolability of human life from conception to natural death.
Drawing upon biblical revelation and Christian anthropology, the Pope emphasizes that human life is a gift from God, the value of which does not depend on an individual’s health, age, abilities, or social status. He specifically warns against threats to life, highlighting abortion, euthanasia, violence, war, and various forms of human exploitation.
Central to the document is the contrast between a "culture of life" and a "culture of death," with the Pope criticizing social and legal systems that—according to Catholic teaching—permit the endangerment of the most vulnerable. He explores the relationship between freedom, conscience, law, and moral responsibility, stressing that civil laws should protect the fundamental right to life.
The encyclical calls upon families, healthcare professionals, politicians, and the faithful to practice solidarity, responsible parenthood, care for the sick, and the protection of the unborn. It particularly underscores the importance of compassion, palliative care, and support for individuals facing difficult life circumstances.
Evangelium vitae presents a systematic exposition of Catholic teaching on the value of human life and a call to build a society founded on love, responsibility, justice, and respect for every human being.
