Djela Augusta Šenoe: Seljačka buna

August Šenoa

August Šenoa's historical novel, which was published in Vijenec in 1877, and was published as a book in 1878. The novel is subtitled "Historical Narrative XVI. century" so it can be seen as a historical monograph in the form of a novel.

The Peasant Revolt is a historical novel by August Šenoa that deals with the events related to the Croatian-Slovenian Peasant Revolt of 1573. The plot takes place in the Croatian Zagorje region at a time when the peasants were exposed to a difficult situation, high taxes and the arbitrariness of the nobility. The cruelty of the nobleman Franjo Tahy is particularly noteworthy, whose abuse of the serfs incites discontent and the desire for rebellion.

The central historical character of the novel is Matija Gubec, who becomes a symbol of the struggle for justice, freedom and equality. In addition to historical events, Šenoa also develops a love story and depicts the lives of different social classes, from peasants to nobility. This gives the novel a rich picture of the time and social relations.

The author faithfully describes the causes of the rebellion, its course and tragic ending. Although the peasants bravely fight for their rights, they face a superior military force and experience defeat. After the collapse of the uprising, many rebels are punished, and Matija Gubec is executed in a cruel manner. Despite his defeat, his sacrifice remains an enduring symbol of resistance to injustice.

The main themes of the novel are the struggle for freedom, social inequality, injustice, courage, and sacrifice. Šenoa emphasizes the importance of human dignity and shows how the pursuit of a more just society can inspire people even in the most difficult circumstances. The novel is considered one of the most important works of Croatian historical literature.
