The Peasant Revolt is a historical novel by August Šenoa that deals with the events related to the Croatian-Slovenian Peasant Revolt of 1573. The plot takes place in the Croatian Zagorje region at a time when the peasants were exposed to a difficult situation, high taxes and the arbitrariness of the nobility. The cruelty of the nobleman Franjo Tahy is particularly noteworthy, whose abuse of the serfs incites discontent and the desire for rebellion.
The central historical character of the novel is Matija Gubec, who becomes a symbol of the struggle for justice, freedom and equality. In addition to historical events, Šenoa also develops a love story and depicts the lives of different social classes, from peasants to nobility.
