Vitez slavonske ravni

Marija Jurić Zagorka

The novel belongs to the historical romance genre and is set in the 18th century, a period when Slavonia was ruled by nobles and when peasants suffered injustice and oppression. It is also interesting because it is the only novel by Zagorka that was not s

Through a dynamic and tense story, Zagorka revives the spirit of the struggle for freedom and justice and depicts the conflict between cruel rulers and brave folk heroes.

The main character of the novel is a mysterious knight, known as the Knight of the Slavonian Plain, who, with his heroic deeds and courage, defends the oppressed and poor peasants from the tyranny of the nobles. No one knows his true identity, but the people celebrate his strength and justice like a legend.

Along with the knight, an important role is played by the young and proud noblewoman Jelena, who clashes with her own noble origins and desire for justice. Jelena falls in love with the knight, not knowing who is hiding behind the mask of the brave fighter. The love story between the two is interwoven with intrigue, battles and dangers, while the nobles plot to capture the mysterious hero and stifle the people's resistance.

Through the character of the Knight of the Slavonian Plain, Zagorka symbolizes the people's strength and unwavering spirit of resistance against tyranny. The novel is permeated with motifs of patriotism, courage, and the fight for justice, while love drama and social injustice are skillfully intertwined.

By skillfully combining historical events and romance, Zagorka creates a powerful story of heroism and love that transcends social differences. The Knight of the Slavonian Plain confirms the author's ability to bring historical themes closer to readers through a dynamic plot, vivid characters, and a passionate fight for ideals.
