Their son Warren, a pilot, and Byron, a submariner, face dangers on the battlefield, while Byron's wife Natalie, a Jew, flees the Holocaust in Europe, facing the horrors of Nazi occupation.
Wouk masterfully combines historical authenticity with emotional depth, depicting how war changes family relationships and the individual.
