Paviljon na poloju

Paviljon na poloju

Robert Louis Stevenson

The Pavilion on the Field is a suspenseful novel that combines adventure, romance, and psychological drama. Set on a secluded Scottish field, it tells the story of Frank Cassilis, a young man who hides from the world in search of peace, but becomes embroi

Frank, disillusioned with life, retreats into seclusion, camping near an old pavilion on his friend Northmour's property. There he meets Northmour, a mysterious and ruthless man, who brings the elderly banker Huddlestone and his daughter Clara to the pavilion. Frank soon learns that Huddlestone is on the run from Italian invaders because of embezzled money, and the pavilion becomes a scene of tension and danger. Frank falls in love with Clara, which draws him deeper into the conflict.

When the invaders besiege the pavilion, a dramatic showdown ensues. Northmour, motivated by his own interests, betrays Huddlestone, while Frank and Clara risk everything to survive. Stevenson masterfully builds tension through atmospheric descriptions of a windy peninsula and a dark pavilion, while the characters reveal complex motives – love, greed and betrayal. Frank's courage and Clara's determination lead them through danger, but the story retains a moral ambiguity.

The novella, told in the first person, highlights Stevenson's talent for creating exciting plots and vivid characters, with themes of the conflict between duty and passion, making it a classic of adventure literature.

The book, in addition to the title novella, contains three other stories by R. L. Stevenson: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Markheim, and The Sorrow of Fales.
