Radikalno žrtvovanje

Radikalno žrtvovanje

Terry Eagleton

Cultural theorist Terry Eagleton's book Radical Sacrifice is a powerful and insightful cultural analysis of sacrifice - which deals with theology, literature, politics and philosophy - as the foundation of modern, as well as ancient, social order.

In modern liberal civilization, the words "sacrifice" and "sacrifice" sound ominous and remind one of meekly falling to the ground, prostrate, before some higher power. In this impressive and comprehensive study, the author argues for a radical version of the concept of sacrifice that focuses on the turbulent transition from weakness to power, with all the accompanying political implications. When properly understood, sacrifice, according to Eagleton, is the kind of self-denial that is a prerequisite for a new, renewed life. The book ranges from the Old and New Testaments through reading the works of Aristotle, Vol. Augustine, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky and Nietzsche all the way to thinkers such as Derrida, Agamben, Žižek and Badiou, including concepts such as love, mortality, martyrdom, gift and scapegoat. The author thoughtfully reflects on this topic by intertwining death and eros, Shakespeare and St. Pavla, irony and hybridity. In doing so, he explores the contemporary meaning of sacrifice, rejecting misconceptions about barbarism in order to make this radical connected the idea with politics and revolution.

"Eagleton is one of the few theorists outside of theological circles who take Christianity seriously. And although some critics call him a disguised Christian apologist, he actually gives equal weight to Christian thought and secular philosophy. Thanks to this, this new book will be equally annoying to militant atheists and Christian fundamentalists. Readers who are not so devoted to dogma will be able to absorb a lot from it."
