Morningside Heights, institucionalno srce New Yorka, također je jedna od arhitektonski najistaknutijih gradskih četvrti.

Visoki plato koji tvori Morningside Heights geografski je izoliran unutar grada i ostao je uglavnom nerazvijen čak i kada su susjedni Harlem i Upper West Side postali prestižne stambene zajednice. Krajem devetnaestog stoljeća institucije su se preselile na plato gdje su bile dostupne pozamašne parcele na pogodnoj udaljenosti od izgrađenog grada. Godine 1887. biskupski biskup Henry Potter objavio je planove za izgradnju velike katedrale na rubu platoa. Katedralu su ubrzo slijedili Columbia College i St. Luke's Hospital, koji su razmišljali o velikim kompleksima, te novije institucije poput Barnard Collegea i Teachers Collegea koje su namjeravale uspostaviti prisutnost u brzo rastućem gradu. Tako je Morningside Heights postao neizbrisivo povezan s njujorškim obrazovnim, medicinskim i vjerskim zakladama, te je prikladno nazvan "Akropolom New Yorka".
