Morningside Heights, das institutionelle Herz von New York City, ist auch eines der architektonisch herausragendsten Viertel der Stadt.

Das Hochplateau, das Morningside Heights bildet, liegt geografisch isoliert innerhalb der Stadt und blieb weitgehend unbebaut, selbst als das benachbarte Harlem und die Upper West Side zu prestigeträchtigen Wohngebieten wurden. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts siedelten Institutionen auf das Plateau um, wo große Grundstücke in günstiger Entfernung zur bebauten Stadt zur Verfügung standen. Im Jahr 1887 kündigte Bischof Henry Potter Pläne für den Bau einer großen Kathedrale am Rande des Plateaus an. Der Kathedrale folgten bald das Columbia College und das St. Luke's Hospital, die große Komplexe erwogen, sowie neuere Institutionen wie das Barnard College und das Teachers College, die eine Präsenz in der schnell wachsenden Stadt aufbauen wollten. So wurde Morningside Heights untrennbar mit den pädagogischen, medizinischen und religiösen Grundlagen New Yorks verbunden und wurde passenderweise „die Akropolis von New York“ genannt.
