Ljudevit Gaj

A reprint of Gaje's writings Short basis from 1830 published in Zagreb, 1983 with a commentary by Josip Bratulić on the "free sheet".

Striving to realize the principle of one voice - one character, Gaj offered solutions in the Short Basis using superslovak characters (diacritical characters) tilde and tick for the phonemes /č/, /ž/, /š/, /l/, /ń/, /đ/ by placing a tilde (~) above c, z, s, n, and a tick (ˇ) above l, n, d. Such a proposal, although even Gaj himself could not immediately implement it, helped to abolish not only the spelling but also the linguistic Kajkavian-Stokavian duality from the first year of Danica and the abolition of the two-way standardization process (Kajkavian in the northwest, Štokavian in other Croatian regions) and helped to introduce the Jekavian language. the Novoštokavian language as the basis of the modern Croatian language standard. Gaje's spelling was accepted by Slovenes and other South Slavic peoples when writing in Latin.
