The action of the book "The Whistle" takes place in the American South during the Second World War. The main character, Benjamin "Ben" Loyd, is a young soldier who joins the army and goes to training.

Through his eyes, we follow the experiences, challenges and friendships that develop among the soldiers. The book explores the themes of courage, fear, human nature and the moral dilemmas that war brings.
