Izabrana dela 4: Kad duša zamire
János Pekri, a young Hungarian immigrant, seeks success and love in America, but finds himself grappling with nostalgia, a loss of identity, and the painful realization that returning to his homeland no longer means returning home.
The novel follows the fate of János Pekri, a young Hungarian lawyer who, in the aftermath of the First World War, leaves his impoverished homeland for America in search of a better life.
In New York, he faces poverty, uncertainty, and the challenges of adapting to a new society. He meets Jennifer Doak—a young woman with whom he falls in love—but their relationship is strained by social disparities and financial hardship. Following a series of life-altering twists, he eventually arrives in Hawaii, where he gradually achieves financial security.
Despite his success, Pekri feels an ever-growing estrangement from his roots. Driven by nostalgia, he commits his memories of youth and his lost homeland to writing. Upon finally returning to Hungary, he discovers that his life has changed irrevocably and that he no longer fully belongs to either his old or his new homeland.
The novel explores themes of emigration, love, social advancement, alienation, and the loss of identity, weaving together an individual’s personal journey with the broader social transformations of the 20th century.
