Kad je napunila osamnaest godina, otac joj daje davno zatvorenu trgovinu svilom, no njezinoj starijoj sestri istodobno prepušta upravljanje uspješnom obiteljskom tvrtkom koja se bavi prodajom svile, što Nicole drži velikom nepravdom. Pogođena time, postaje bolno svjesna nepravdi i na drugim razinama, osobito u odnosu Francuza prema Vijetnamcima. U tjeskobnom ozračju ratnih zbivanja i brojnih nesuglasica sa sestrom i ocem, Nicole pronalazi utjehu u bliskom prijateljstvu s Markom, šarmantnim Amerikancem, a potom s Tranom, mladim gerilcem iz redova Viet Minha. A kad se nađe u intimnoj dilemi hoće li se prikloniti Francuzima ili pobunjenicima život će joj krenuti neočekivanim smjerom…
