Branislav Nušić

Branislav Nušić, one of the best Serbian comedians, wrote the work Suspicious Face as a way to make fun of the society of that time and the corrupt, arrogant people in power.

Suspicious Face is also his most famous work. He finished writing in 1888 and took it to the editor of the "Royal Serbian National Theatre". Although he liked the work immensely, his advice was that Nušić should wait before publishing it because the government at that time did not tolerate ridicule at its own expense. Thus, the work was published only after thirty-five years. It achieved incredible success, and was performed for the first time on May 29, 1923 in the Belgrade theater.
