Igra s đavolovim repom

Igra s đavolovim repom

Vitomil Zupan

Zupan's novel The Game with the Devil's Tail is entirely dedicated to what has long been a taboo topic in Slovenian literature - human sexuality.

In this novel, sexuality is the embodiment of cynical violence, a challenge to moralizing, and above all, a challenge to hypocrisy. The author, therefore, uses sexuality to talk about sexuality as an attribute of a man who is primarily a social being, not a sexual hero. Zupan's preoccupation with human sexuality has its roots in his interest in all dimensions of human power and activity. It could be argued that his main character shows the true face of his humanity - what kind of man he is - precisely in his sexuality. This human "game" in the novel is accompanied by principled insights, which are far from moralizing, but are inseparable from the main character, even when he praises himself, his potency, in undisciplined language, such as aggressiveness can be expressed.

This kind of prose, which can be shocking if we ignore Zupan's virtuosity and refinement in telling and presenting, is a great rarity in our country, it is an old topic, but it has never been expressed like this before.
