Stephen King

"Insomnia" is a novel by horror master Stephen King. The story is set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine, known from King's other works, and deals with themes of age, death, fate and the struggle between good and evil.

The main character is Ralph Roberts, an elderly man who begins to face a serious problem of insomnia after the death of his wife. Over time, the insomnia worsens, but Ralph also notices unusual changes in his perception: he begins to see auras around people, which allows him to "see" their emotions and state of mind.

As Ralph tries to cope with his own condition, Derry becomes a scene of tension due to a controversial campaign for abortion rights. Local resident Ed Deepneau, who is vehemently opposed to abortion, becomes increasingly violent and threatens an extreme act of terrorism. Ralph realizes that his visions and supernatural gifts have a deeper purpose.

Ralph discovers the existence of the Parcae, mystical beings similar to the Greek fates, who manipulate people's fates. They are divided into the "small level" (which maintains balance in daily lives) and the "high level" (which decides the fate of the universe). Ralph and his friend Lois Chasse enter the conflict between these forces, realizing that they have a key role in stopping the disaster.

Through a series of tense events, Ralph must choose between personal sacrifices and the greater good, and the book culminates in a touching and philosophical finale that leaves a strong emotional impression.
