O podnošljivosti

O podnošljivosti

Aleš Čar

In this masterfully composed novel, Aleš Čar, one of the most intriguing contemporary Slovenian writers, follows three generations of a family living in a mining town along the present-day Slovenian-Italian border.

In the center of the novel is an old Father, a smuggler and double bassist who served in four armies in the Great War and played four national anthems, his five daughters (Zero, First, Second, Third and Fourth) and two grandchildren (the narrator and the Last). The writer suggestively shows the global military madness, and at the same time descends down a thin thread into a complex family labyrinth, showing that the intimate hell is no less terrible than the ideological one. Family secrets, complicated relationships, incest, conflicts whose consequences unravel over decades make up the thick fabric of this brilliantly written novel.

"Char's walk through the 20th century brings an insight into what the basic Slovenian family values grew out of and of course into what mercilessly searched and broke them, from the proverbial alcoholism to incestuousness." - Igor Bartož, Delo
