Gustav Meyrink

The Angel of the West Window is a strange fictional novel by Gustave Meyrink steeped in alchemical, hermetic, occult and mystical imagery and ideas, interweaving the life of Elizabethan magician Dr. John Dee with that of a fictional modern descendant, Bar

The story begins when Müller inherits the personal effects of his recently deceased relative, including the diaries of Dr. Dee. Reading them, Müller discovers Dee's aspirations to discover the secret of immortality through alchemy and hermeticism, as well as his mystical encounters with the "Green Angel" through the medium Edward Kelley. As he delve into the contents of the diaries, Müller realizes that he is not only a descendant of Dr. Dee, but may also be his reincarnation.

Müller takes on the responsibility of guarding the Spear of Hywel Dda, an artifact associated with his ancestor, and faces the threat of the demonic figure of the black Isaïs, who seeks to take control of the spear. Through a series of occult and mystical experiences, Müller manages to defeat Isaïs, transforming himself into the "Man of the Rose" - an immortal being whose mission is to help humanity in its spiritual development.

In this novel, Meyrink combines elements of gothic horror, occultism and philosophy, exploring themes such as reincarnation, alchemy, spiritual transformation and the struggle between good and evil. "The Angel from the West Window" is considered one of his most ambitious and complex works, providing readers with a deep insight into the human soul and the search for transcendence.
