Drugovi I-II

Drugovi I-II

Tone Seliškar

A collection of short stories that follow the lives of young people, mostly pupils and students, during and after World War II, with an emphasis on their ideological struggle, maturation, and development of awareness of social changes.

The theme of comradeship is at the center – not only as friendship, but also as a deep shared sense of belonging, solidarity and the fight for a more just society.

The characters are young, full of idealism, often at turning points in their lives, where they have to choose between personal interest and a higher goal. Through various situations – from war, illegal activities, prison, to post-war reconstruction and education – the author shows how a new type of person is formed: a comrade. This concept goes beyond ordinary friendships because it also includes a political dimension, loyalty to the collective, courage and willingness to sacrifice.

Seliškar's style remains simple, warm and emotional, often with autobiographical elements, and through the dialogues and inner monologues of the characters he manages to show their deep inner struggle. Although written in the spirit of socialist realism, the cycle "Comrades" offers an authentic view of a period in Slovenian and Yugoslav society, and emphasizes the importance of togetherness and loyalty to an idea.
