Charlotte Rogan

In Charlotte Rogan's suspenseful novel On the Boat, young bride Grace struggles to survive in a crowded lifeboat after a shipwreck, where cruelty, paranoia, and power struggles reign.

The novel In the Boat is the debut and acclaimed work of American author Charlotte Rogan, which in an exceptionally provocative way questions the limits of human morality, selfishness and survival in extreme circumstances. The story is set in 1914, and is told from the perspective of twenty-two-year-old Grace Winter, a newly widowed woman who finds herself in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after the luxury ocean liner Carpathia (or the fictional ship Empress) sinks under unclear circumstances.

When Grace and her surviving companions find themselves squeezed into a small, overcrowded lifeboat with limited supplies of food and water, the idyllic picture of noble survivors quickly turns into a brutal fight for their lives. Under the leadership of the charismatic sailor Hardy, the boat quickly turns into a microcosm in which strict hierarchy, fear and power struggles reign. As the days pass and hope for salvation fades, the fragile rules of civilized behavior begin to crumble. The survivors face difficult choices – who has the right to stay on the boat, and who must be thrown out so that the others can survive?

Rogan skillfully builds psychological tension, keeping the reader in suspense as the story unfolds as part of the investigation and trial in which Grace must defend herself against charges of murder. Through her cool but insightful voice, the author asks uncomfortable questions about the nature of justice, collective guilt, and the hypocrisy of Victorian society, creating a layered and deeply disturbing study of human character in the face of ultimate ruin.
