Lovci na skalpove

Lovci na skalpove

Thomas Mayn Reid

The novel is set in the American Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico) during the conflict between white settlers, Mexicans and Indians.

A young English naturalist comes to the American West to study plants and animals, but soon finds himself drawn into a series of dramatic events. He meets Karl, with whom he travels through dangerous frontier areas. During his journey, he encounters scalp hunters – white adventurers who kill Indians and Mexicans to sell their scalps for a reward. The narrator is horrified by the brutality of this “business” and slowly realizes that the line between civilization and savagery is very thin. At the same time, he falls in love with Lilian, a girl who has been kidnapped by Indians and then by bandits. The plot culminates in the search for Lilian, escapes, clashes with Indians and a dramatic clash with the scalp hunters. Ultimately, the heroes manage to rescue Lilian and expose the bandits’ crimes, while the narrator remains marked by what he has seen – and morally aware of the savagery that comes from white “civilized” people as well.
