Razgovor s Gojom / Mostovi / Znakovi pored puta: izbor - Conversation with Goya / Bridges / Signs by the Roadside: selection

Ivo Andrić

The bilingual edition of Dereta brings selected prose and essay works by Ivo Andrić – Conversation with Goja, Bridges and Signs by the Road – in a parallel Serbian-English presentation.

This edition by the renowned Belgrade publishing house Dereta, originally published under the title Conversation with Goya / Bridges / Signs by the Roadside: selection, is an exceptional literary and translational undertaking. The book brings together some of the most beautiful and profound pages from the pen of the only Yugoslav Nobel laureate, Ivo Andrić, combining three of his masterpieces of essayistic and reflective expression into a unique bilingual whole.

At the heart of the collection is the famous essay Conversation with Goya, a powerful meditation on the dark abysses of history, human suffering, and artistic creativity born of pain and horror. It is followed by the anthological Bridges, a lyrical prose in which the author celebrates builders as the greatest benefactors of humanity whose works bridge the abysses of time, space, and interpersonal misunderstandings. The collection is rounded out by lucid and fragmentary writings from Signs by the Road, in which Andrić, from the position of a traveler and observer, records fleeting events, intimate dilemmas, and wise observations about human nature.

Thanks to the parallel text in Serbian and English, this book allows domestic and foreign readers, as well as lovers of comparative literature, to fully experience Andrić's stylistic virtuosity, refined metaphors, and universal humanistic message. The work functions as a lasting literary monument that connects worlds and cultures.
