Brian Garfield

"The Paladin" Brian Garfield's novel, is a suspenseful spy story that follows Kendaig, a retired CIA agent who finds himself in danger after leaking sensitive information. The novel is based on true events.

Tired of the life of a spy, but forced to flee because of threats from the CIA and KGB, Kendig decides to turn the tables. Instead of hiding, he begins an elaborate game of cat and mouse, publishing excerpts from his memoirs to outwit his pursuers and expose their secrets.

The main character, Miles Kendig, is a brilliant but cynical operative who uses his experience and intelligence to manipulate the situation. As he travels through Europe and America, he challenges his former employers, especially CIA agent Cutter, who tries to predict his moves. The novel is notable for its tense atmosphere, unexpected twists, and focus on the psychological game between the characters rather than physical action. Kendig's motivation is not only survival, but also revenge on the system that used and rejected him.

Garfield skillfully builds a story of betrayal, loyalty, and moral dilemmas in the world of espionage. The novel won the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1976 and was adapted into a film of the same name starring Walter Matthau. Although the book is more of an intellectual thriller than an action thriller, it keeps the reader in suspense through Kendig's ingenuity and unpredictability.
