Stope u snijegu

Stope u snijegu

Patricia M. St. John

The story takes place in the picturesque Swiss Alps, in a small mountain village, where the snow and winter ambiance serve as a metaphor for purity, forgiveness, and renewal.

The story begins with a Christmas idyll in the snow: Annette and her little brother Dani live modestly with their grandmother in a mountain home. Annette is a model student and a caring sister, but her life is turned upside down when her mother dies in childbirth, leaving her to care for the family. At school, she clashes with Lucien, a boy who is jealous of her grades and achievements. Lucien's despair and anger culminate in a tragic incident in the snow: while sledding, he accidentally (or intentionally?) throws Annette into a pit, and later, in a panic, breaks little Dani's leg and leaves him suffering in the cold. Dani, broken-legged and heartbroken, becomes an invalid and withdraws into himself, while Annette blossoms with hatred for Lucien, seeking revenge instead of forgiveness. Lucien, accused of a crime, flees into the mountains, where he meets an old man - a former missionary who bears his own scars from sin and loss. Through their friendship, Lucien learns the depth of God's forgiveness and the courage to return and repair the damage. The plot unfolds through winter storms and spring thaws, symbolizing the characters' inner transformation. Annette must confront the poison of hatred, while Dani, like a "treasure in the snow," discovers the power of love. The book ends with the message that forgiveness is hard to come by, but brings greater joy than revenge—a lesson that has resonated with readers for decades.
