Crna Dalija

James Ellroy

The Black Dahlia (1987) by James Ellroy is a crime novel inspired by the real-life, unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short in 1947 in Los Angeles. The work is the first in Ellroy's L.A. Quartet, known for its inspiring depiction of the city and complex plots.

The plot follows two police officers, Bucky Bleichert and Lee Blanchard, former boxers and friends, who investigate the gruesome murder of a young woman, nicknamed the Black Dahlia for her style and media sensation. The body is found dismembered and mutilated, which triggers a massive manhunt for the killer.

Bucky and Lee, in love with the same woman, Kay Lake, become obsessed with the case. The investigation takes them through the dark side of Hollywood, revealing police corruption, prostitution and hidden relationships. Bucky meets Madeleine Sprague, a girl similar to Elizabeth, which further complicates his personal life and the investigation. Lee's behavior becomes increasingly unstable, and revelations about his past and connections to criminals deepen the drama.

The novel explores themes of obsession, moral dilemmas and corruption in post-war Los Angeles. Ellroy mixes fact with fiction, offering a solution to a murder that is not actually solved. Through an intense style and complex characters, it portrays the dark side of the American dream.
