John Wayne Cleaver is a fifteen-year-old high school student from the small American town of Clayton. He has been diagnosed with sociopathy, is obsessively fascinated by serial killers, and is aware that he carries the potential for violence within him. In order not to become a monster, he has imposed strict rules of conduct on himself: never to hurt animals, never to possess people, never to allow himself to enjoy the suffering of others.
When brutal murders begin in the city – the victims are dismembered with unusual precision – John immediately recognizes the pattern of a serial killer. Instead of staying away, he becomes obsessed with the hunt. Using his knowledge of forensic psychology (which he has acquired from books and documentaries), he begins to follow the clues and soon discovers the impossible: the killer is not human, but a supernatural being – a demon that takes over bodies and feeds on organs.
The novel combines psychological thriller, horror, and a dark young-adult story. John fights on two fronts: against a real monster and against the monster within himself. The question is not just whether he will catch the killer, but whether he will cross the line himself and become what he fears most.
