Heidi

Heidi

Johanna Spyri

Heidi, an orphan from the Swiss Alps, changes her lonely grandfather with warmth, makes friends with Peter and Klara, and discovers how love, nature, and belonging cure loneliness and fear.

HeidiJohanne Spyri is a timeless children's novel about growing up, the need for love, the power of kindness and the healing connection with nature. The main character is the orphan Heidi, whom her aunt brings to her grandfather, a recluse who lives high in the Swiss Alps, far from people and the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Although the grandfather at first seems harsh, silent and unapproachable, Heidi's cheerfulness, sincerity and spontaneity gradually melts his isolation and restores warmth to their relationship. In the mountain environment, the girl discovers a simple but fulfilling life, befriends the shepherd Peter and develops a deep love for the mountains, animals and freedom.

When she goes to Frankfurt to keep the sickly Klara company, Heidi is faced with a completely different world - a world of strict rules, closed rooms and alienation from nature. In such an atmosphere, she feels sadness and a strong longing for the Alps, but her kindness and cheerfulness change the people around her even there.

Her special friendship with Klara shows how closeness, compassion and sincere joy can have an encouraging and healing effect. The novel emphasizes the importance of family, friendship, inner purity and living in harmony with nature.

The first edition in the Vjeverica library was published in 1957.
