Porijeklo

Porijeklo

Amin Maalouf

"Origin" is truly a magnificent pledge. At the same time, it is a long and sublime prayer. A love poem dedicated to a family that is actually the only homeland for this letter in exile.

In this odyssey, this is also Amin Maalouf's project: to gather the history of his own people, to examine their collective memory and to resurrect the fate of the Maalouf "tribe", a fate that scattered them from Lebanon all over the world - all the way to America and Cuba... In this adventure that spans more than a century, the author of the novel "The Rock of Tanios" summons the dead, the living, ancestors, spirits; explores their legend; follows them through the death throes of the Ottoman Empire; observes this diaspora made up of mystics, freemasons, professors, merchants, dreamers-polyglots and cosmopolitans. Family loyalty is above all tied to the Lebanese mountain village, and from this one can discern various obligations towards family, religion, region, country, language, work, poetry and thinking. The Maaloufs are somewhat marked by exile as an important experience, but it was not just the mere loss of their home that he endlessly regrets. Amin Maalouf knows that their feverish blood flows in his veins. And he also knows that his own life's journey would be in vain if he were not true to that shining lineage with his writing and heart.
