Volpone

Volpone

Ben Jonson

The general opinion is that the play represents not only a sound and valid theatrical model but also a brilliant literary work, which belongs to the anthology of Western dramatic poetry.

Ben Jonson (1572–1637) and his best play, Volpone (The Fox, as the author himself adds in the subtitle), have not left the world's stages to this day. In short, today we have before us a classic play, but then completely new, "modern" and full of elements that appear for the first time, and which have remained as an integral part of European dramatic technology until the twentieth century. In themselves, Jonson's best comedies, among which Volpone occupies the place of masterpieces, are no worse than Shakespeare's, only – Jonson is different, belongs to a somewhat different tradition, a different type of inspiration.
