The narrative time that Fowles writes about is the reign of Queen Victoria, a time of comfortable middle-class life in which religious postulates and scientific progress were believed in almost equal measure.
The story of a young governess Sarah, in love with a French officer whose ship ran aground on the English coast and who swore allegiance to her, but then returned to his homeland, leaving Sarah still waiting for him, a somewhat idle naturalist of lower noble origin Charles, and his fiancée Ernestine, a girl from a wealthy merchant family, is set in 1867 and is embedded in the image of English society of the Victorian era.
The book consists of two volumes.
